YAKUSHIMA’S ILLUSION, 2025

France, Japan, Belgium | DCP, Color, 122’ | French, Japanese, English
Director: Naomi Kawase
Cast: Vicky Krieps, Kanichiro

In the mist-covered island of Yakushima, French doctor Corry works in Japan as a pediatric heart transplant coordinator. One day, she begins searching for her lover Jin, a photographer who has mysteriously disappeared. Her personal quest draws her into confronting subjects considered taboo in Japanese society—organ donation, death, and loss. In this latest film, Kawase delicately explores invisible processes of mourning and the boundaries between cultures, portraying quiet acts of solidarity within an emotionally restrained world. Through Krieps’ powerful performance, the film traces the fragile line between disappearance and reemergence.
