Rithy Panh, known for the Oscar-nominated The Missing Picture, this time turns his camera to the indigenous Bunong people living in the mountainous region of the country’s northeast. The agricultural practices inherited from their ancestors, their cyclical relationship with nature, and a way of life in which barter replaces money are becoming increasingly difficult to sustain in the face of globalisation, corporate pressure on land, and the climate crisis. Combining years of footage with archival material from different periods, Panh does more than document a vanishing culture; he questions a modern world in which land is defined by ownership, nature by resource value, and life by economic worth.
