Director: Frederick Wiseman
Frederick Wiseman’s National Gallery takes place entirely within the walls of its namesake institution in London, guiding viewers on an expansive journey behind the scenes of the museum. Focusing on masterpieces of Western art from the Middle Ages to the 19th century, the film becomes not only the portrait of a building, but also an exploration of a working institution – its inner operations, its relationship to the world, its staff, its visitors, and the artworks it houses. In this dizzying hall of mirrors, at times the film seems to observe the artworks, and at others the artworks seem to observe the film. Wiseman offers a richly layered perspective on a museum that has existed for nearly two centuries.
