On a summer day, a man visiting a quiet seaside town where his mother lives has a chance encounter with a city woman. On a winter day, a screenwriter suffering from writer’s block sets out to find the owner of a guesthouse he once stayed in—alone in the snow-covered mountains. The shy glances of summer by the sea turn into a quiet meeting in winter. Two Seasons, Two Strangers, which brings together Tsuge Yoshiharu’s manga Scenes from the Seaside and Mr. Ben and His Igloo, unites the solitude of nature with the inner worlds of its characters. With its contemplative yet unassuming tone—dreamlike yet grounded—the film stands out as this year’s winner of the Golden Leopard.
