When her father, the “tribal chieftain,” falls ill, sixteen-year-old En-en descends from her mountain village to the city. Her goal is to obtain the document that formalizes the Ati people’s ancestral land rights. But bureaucratic obstacles and outside forces threatening the region turn her journey into an uphill struggle. Blending documentary and fiction, the film tells the story of the Ati community, one of the indigenous peoples of Western Visayas, and their fight to reclaim their land, directly through their own experiences. With a cast of non-professional actors almost entirely composed of Ati community members performing in the Inati language, Tumandok is a spare, sincere, and powerful film that places the people it represents at the heart of the narrative.
