SOUND OF FALLING (IN DIE SONNE SCHAUEN), 2025

Germany | DCP, Color, 149’ | German
Director: Mascha Schilinski
Cast: Hanna Heckt, Lena Urzendowsky, Susanne Wuest

Set on a farm in the Altmark region of northern Germany, the film interweaves the stories of four generations of women, Alma, Erika, Angelika, and Lenka, who grow up in the same place at different times. Shaped by the upheavals of the twentieth century, wars, and the East–West German divide, this turbulent landscape is narrated through the women’s repressed experiences. With time moving back and forth, the farmhouse becomes a silent witness to national history. In a world where male violence and social domination repeat across generations, the characters struggle to exist against the roles assigned to them. Schilinski’s second feature brings individual fates into contact with collective memory through a poetic, unsettling language. The film won the Jury Prize in the Main Competition at the Cannes Film Festival.
