In his latest film Tom Tykwer, known for his films Run Lola Run and Perfume, tells us the story of a Kenyan child. To save his father’s soul, 14-year-old Abila takes council with an elderly woman from another tribe. The latter gives him six tasks to perform. A film whose concerns range from HIV to intertribal war, and from economic woes to the world of crime, and which questions “modern African man.” This coming-of-age story which is notable for its dynamic and sincere expressive language combines Kenya’s different aspects, faiths, and customs.
