Living in Vienna, Matthias makes a living by slipping into different identities shaped to other people’s expectations. He can be a cultured boyfriend, a model son, or a professional “friend” hired to rehearse an argument. When he begins a new relationship in his personal life, the meticulously maintained system of performances he’s built starts to crack. With dark humour, the film takes on modern masculinity and performative identity, making visible the cost of existing for others. Bernhard Wenger’s debut feature Peacock had its world premiere at Venice Critics’ Week.
