ORPHAN (ÁRVA), 2025

Hungary | DCP, Color, 132’ | Hungarian
Director: László Nemes
Cast: Bojtorján Barabas, Andrea Waskovics, Grégory Gadebois

After the Oscar-winning Son of Saul and Sunset, Nemes returns to another historical rupture. Orphan is set in Budapest in the immediate aftermath of the suppression of the 1956 Hungarian Uprising, in a city bearing the traces of war and revolt. The world of 12-year-old Andor, who lives with his mother and grows up on heroic stories told about his father, is upended by the unexpected visit of a man claiming to be his real father. This encounter triggers the child’s search for identity while bringing the family’s repressed wartime past to the surface. Shot on 35mm and inspired by the director’s own family history, the film threads an intimate coming-of-age story through collective trauma and historical memory.
