KOKUHO (KOKUHÔ), 2025

Japan | DCP, Color, 174' | Japanese
Director: Sang-il Lee
Cast: Keitatsu Koshiyama, Soya Kurokawa, Ai Mikami

A generational story of conflict set within Japan’s deep-rooted Kabuki theater tradition. The film focuses on the complex relationship between master actor Hanjiro Onoe, who holds the title of “national treasure” (kokuho), and his son Shunsuke. As Shunsuke follows in his father’s footsteps and takes on leading roles onstage, he is crushed under the weight of strict discipline, physical sacrifice, and inherited legacy. Through backstage rehearsals, costume rituals, and performance sequences, the film also questions the place of traditional arts in Japan today. Kokuho screened in the Orizzonti section of the Venice Film Festival.
