JESUS OF MONTREAL (JÉSUS DE MONTRÉAL), 1989

Canada, France | DCP, Color, 120' | French, English, Italian
Director: Denys Arcand
Cast: Lothaire Bluteau, Catherine Wilkening, Johanne-Marie Tremblay

Inspired by an actor who portrays Jesus in the evenings while working commercial jobs during the day, the film follows a group of performers who come together to stage a play about the life of Jesus. Led by Daniel, and each grappling with their own struggles, the group’s bold reinterpretation of the Gospel unsettles established Christian doctrine and provokes the reaction of Catholic authorities. As the story unfolds, Daniel’s life begins to echo that of Jesus in unexpected ways. The film examines the relationship between spirituality and consumer culture.
