Named after a slogan used during the 1919 occupation, this documentary centers on poet-soldier Gabriele D’Annunzio’s seizure of Rijeka (then called Fiume). This largely forgotten historical moment is revisited from the present as a proto-fascist venture, staged as a collective performance with the participation of hundreds of local residents. Blending archival footage with inventive reenactments, Death to Fiume! reveals early forms of fascist aesthetics in a playful yet unsettling tone, turning historical propaganda into a living field of memory by forging links between past and present. The film won the Tiger Award at the Rotterdam Film Festival, where it had its world premiere.
