Born on Christmas Day in 1960, Zachary grows up with three brothers, a music-loving authoritarian father, and a devoted mother. Yet the difference that emerges at an early age is not easily accepted by his family or by the working-class milieu of suburban Montréal. The tension between suppressing his sexuality and expressing himself freely forms the film’s central dynamic. Set in 1970s Québec, Jean-Marc Vallée’s semi-autobiographical film stands out for its strong sense of period and use of music, and marks a turning point in the international visibility of Québec cinema.
