Beans tells the story of the 1990 Oka Crisis from the perspective of a 12-year-old Mohawk girl. On the threshold of adolescence, Tekahentakwa is forced to confront both her identity and the violence she experiences amid an escalating land conflict. Interweaving a personal coming-of-age story with a moment of political rupture, the director’s semi-autobiographical approach offers an internal perspective on Canada’s colonial history, revealing how resistance and belonging are shaped.
