Atanarjuat, a young and strong hunter, and his brother Amaqjuaq are two respected figures within their community. However, Atanarjuat’s decision to pursue Atuat – whom Oki, the son of a powerful leader, also wishes to marry – sparks a deep and lasting conflict between them. Adapted from a centuries-old Inuit legend, the film stands out for its predominantly Inuit cast and crew and for being shot in the Inuktitut language. Reconstructing the relationship between humans and nature, the pre-colonial Arctic world, and collective memory through a powerful visual language, Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner received the Camera d’Or for Best First Feature at the Cannes Film Festival.
