MAGNUM IN MOTION ON TOUR
İstanbul Modern Cinema's Magnum in Motion on Tour program presents 19 documentary films by and about photographers from the renowned international agency Magnum Photos reflecting diverse origins and directions. There are no formal boundaries, only the desire to document, record and create images. The films selected for Magnum in Motion make new pictures and poetic images, and unknown contemporary documents available to the film audience.

EVE ARNOLD

BEHIND THE VEIL

Eve Arnold gives us a rare glimpse of the life 'behind the veil' in the world of the harem, as she films the life of a young Sheikha preparing for marriage into the ruling family of Dubai.

EVE AND MARILYN

This documentary on the doyenne of Magnum, Eve Arnold focuses specifıcally upon her relationship with Marilyn Monroe, whom Arnold photographed perhaps more than any other photographer of over a period of time.

Magnum'un Hikâyesi, ajansın kurucuları olan Robert Capa, Henri Cartier­Bresson, George Rodger ve David (Chim) Seymour'un kariyerlerini, 1930'Iar ve İkinci Dünya Savaşı boyunca izliyor ve savaştan hemen sonra bir araya gelerek Magnum'u kurmalarını anlatıyor.

PART 1: DECISIVE MOMENTS
Magnum Story follows the careers of the four founders Robert Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson, George Rodger, David (Chim) Seymour, during the 1930s and the Second World War. Just after the war, they came together to found Magnum, and the films shows how the agency was established.

PART 2: THE SAVAGE YEARS

Part 2 of the Magnum Story deals with the turbulent 60s, and follows the Magnum photographers who documented this momentous, exciting, yet troubled decade producing some of the most powerful images.

CAMBODIAN ODYSSEY

Philip Jones Griffiths - the noted author of the classic photo book Vietnam inc. has been photographing South-East Asia and Cambodia of more than 35 years. Richard Traylor­Smith's portrait of Jones Griffiths follows his trip to Cambodia in the 90s.

A short, beautiful, silent impression of life on the decks of a trawler, the film captures the beauties of a fisherman's life.

THE SMOKING HOUSE

The film looks affectionately at a group of women doing a repetitious and boring work at a smoking house.

SUBMARINE

Jean Gaumy accompanied La Perla submarine on a four month tour to make a five part documentary for the French television. This is a glimpse into the depth of the documentary.

VIDEO DIARIES: DYING FOR PUBLICITY

Not only the infinite sorrows of Africa, but the processes of bearing witness to them are brought vividly to life in this gripping video diary. Frequently unbearably poignant, and sometimes painfully honest, Steele-Perkins documents famine and disease in Somalia and the Sudan.

MISERY LOVES COMPANY: THE LIFE AND DEATH OF BRUCE GILDEN

Gideon Gold's film not only reveals the extremely confrontational Gilden way of photographing people on the New York streets, it has the photographer philosophizing candidly about his life, his difficult upbringing, his relationship with his daughter and singular approach to photography.

BEAUTY KNOWS NO PAIN

Elliot Erwitt takes a sharply focused look at the training of young girls whose ambition is to become a 'Rangerette' - a cheerleader at Kilgore College, Texas.

THINK OF ENGLAND

The film explores an issue that has concerned Martin Parr as a photographer throughout his career - the nature of Englishness.

RENE BURRI

TWO FACES OF CHINA

Rene Burri traveled thousands of miles through China, to town and country. His film examines how Chinese Communism had reconciled - or perhaps had not reconciled. The film had just finished before Chairman Mao's Cultural Revolution burst upon China, attempting to sweep away traditional China.

THE TRAIN

Shot over nearly a year, but memorable for its shots of the Siberian winter, Donovan Wylie's film follows a 'church train' over the broad, empty landscape of Northern and Eastern Russia.

PICTURES FROM A REVOLUTION

Susan Meiselas returned to Nicaragua with filmmakers Richard P. Rogers and Alfred Guzzetti, ten years after she published her renowned book about the Sandinista Revolution, Nicaragua (1981), curious to find the people she photographed and ask them whether they thought the pain and the sacrifice worthwhile.
