HUMAN ENIGMA: CHRISTIAN PETZOLD

Christian Petzold was bom in Hilden in 1960 and studied German and Theatre studies. During his education he wrote film critiques for SFB and newspapers. in 1988 he was accepted into the German Film & Television Academy in Berlin. He worked as assistant director to Harun Farocki and Hartmut Bitomsky. In 1994-95 he directed and wrote his first feature-length film, Pilotinnen, which was shown on the German channel ZDF. Cuba Libre and Die Beischlafdiebin his preceding feature-films were made for ZDF. In 1996 Cuba Libre won the Max-Ophüls-Award ceremony's jury encouragement award. He made his grand acknowledgment in 2000 by winning the Golden German Cinema Award with The State I am in/ Die innere Sicherheit. His following work in 2003 Something to Remind Me / Toter Mann, as script­writer and director, Petzold received the Grimme Award. His film Wolfsburg (writer and director), a drama revolving around aman who accidentally hits and run, also was nominated for quite a few awards, the film won the Golden Grimme Award. In 2005 Petzold with Ghosts / Gespenster gave the lead to an important actor like Julia Hummer. The film was one of the three to be shown at the 55th Berlinale's competition.

Following the screening of Gespenster / Ghosts director Christian Petzold will be in conversation with Klaus Eder and Alin Taşçıyan.

Klaus Eder based in Munich, Germany, is the General Secretary of FIPRESCl-lnternational Federation of Film Critics. Has been working as a film critic since the 1960s. Books on filmmakers include Andrzej Wajda, Luis Bunuel, Nikita Mikhalkov and Andrei Konchalovski, Arturo Ripstein, im Kwon-taek and Nagisa Oshima.

Jeanne is 15 years-old, going through adolescence but she is incapable of leading a normal life. She lives with her parents Clara and Hans, who once used to belong to an underground terrorist organization. Therefore, the family constantly moves around and finds that long-term friendships are dangerous. The constant presence of tension prevent daily life's regular emotions. However, one day Jeanne meets surfer Heinrich and falls in love. In the meantime Jeanne's parents Clara and Hans are preparing for their next getaway by planning a bank robbery in order to finance their travels.

Toter Mann ("dead man" in English and the German expression describing the position of a swimmer floating on its back, legs together with arms stretched out to the side) opens in a thermal spa where a young woman is floating in that very same position. Her name is Leyla. Aman observes her. He meets her again and falls in love with her. His name is Thomas and he's a lawyer. But after their first night together, Leyla vanishes.

Car salesman Philip Wagner who is a native of Wolfsburg, is driving aıong an asphalted dirt road used by the locals as a short cut to Wolfsburg. He is having an argument on his mobile with his fiancee when, suddenly, he runs ever a child. He sees the child's body in his rear-view mirror hesitates, brakes, but does not get out.

A man traveling from Paris to Bertin Is in search of his wife. He finds her in a psychiatric hospital in Spandau and takes her back to Paris. His wife every year travels to Berlin, desperately searching for her daughter who was kidnapped in 1989 at the age of three. The woman suddenly finds Nina. Nina has no aim in life apart from hanging out with Toni the thief. The woman believes that her confrontation with Nina means that she has found her lost daughter. Director Petzold comments on the film "Ghosts, is about silhouettes who do not want to believe they are dead. They believe love with resurrect them."

From one of the most prolifıc Finnish directors of children's film, comes a sparkling fantasy adventure with timeless, universal themes that affect children and adults alike. A pelican lands in Finland and becomes so fascinated by humans that he decides to learn to live and be like them. The pelican gets a job at the opera house, befriends two children, a boy and a girl, and falls in love with a lovely ballerina.

Markus lmboden's Heidi is the 17th film adapted from the original novel, which is one of the greatest children's classics of all times. Transmitted to today's world without losing sight of the novel, Heidi replaces the alpine grasslands with the skyscrapers and streets of the city. Heidi, a blue­haired, self-assured girl, is placed with her relluctant and mysterious grandfather when her mother dies. But then she has to leave for Berlin to live with her Aunt Dete and her cousin Clara. A "difficult-child", Clara is a Britney Spears-wannabe, who is not at all happy with her new sister and is hostile to her. Ali that Heidi has in mind is to run away and get back to her sad grandfather who is left all alone.

A lovely animation tale to teach the value of freedom to our children. A long time ago, a Russian general sacrifices hundreds of birds to bum Moscow in order to save his country had. He becomes a national hero. Now retired, the general lives alone in Saint Petersburg, where he is attacked every day by the birds there. By chance he crosses paths with an extraordinary dog and the two of them proceed to wage a delicate battle. One day, all of the city's dogs leave their owners in order to obtain the liberation of all caged birds. The general intervenes in what will be his most noble struggle.

There's nothing that ten-year-old Marietta wants more for her birthday than a little dog. But what does she get instead? A silly, old rock. Except that this rock is special: it fulfils its owner's greatest wish. And sure enough, one morning Marietta wakes up to find a litlle dog waiting to play with her. But when she notices that her four-year-old brother Tobias is missing, she realizes that he has been transformed into the dog! With their parents away and grandma too obsessed with cleaning to notice that anything's wrong, Marietta-begins to feel lonely and does her best to-turn "Tobi" the dog back into "Tobias" the boy.

Sometimes in life you have to answer difficult questions, especially if they are linked with sensuality. What is the color of milk? This film, about love and other natural disasters, gives an intelligent, beautiful, well-crafted and humorous answer, through the 12-years-old Selma, who has some trouble knowing what love is and what it is not.

This documentary series belong to the Collegi d'Arquitectes de Catalunya (CoAC). The institution was established in 1931, though the library was initiated by the former Architects' Association of Catalonia in 1874. The documentary collection is based on six talks produced in the 80's which were held at the CoAC Library Archives. The goals of the Architectural Archives are to preserve, record and make widely known Catalonia's architectural heritage. The generosity of the donors has produced the best source of documentation about Catalan architecture of the 19th and 20th centuries. The series is based on six primary Catalan architects of the 20th century.
