Japanese Art at the Museum: Shodo Workshops

Saturday, May 10, 2025

Venue: Istanbul Modern Event Rooms

Istanbul Modern hosts Shodo artist Hiroyuki Takahashi for the second public event of Chiharu Shiota’s exhibition “Between Worlds,” organized in collaboration with the Japan Foundation.

Supported by the Consulate General of Japan in Istanbul, Takahashi conducts two Shodo workshops on Saturday, May 10, between 11.00–13.00 and 14.00–16.00. Participants learn the fundamental techniques of this calligraphic art, which in Japanese means “the way of writing,” while also exploring the philosophy behind it.

Born in 1947 in Tochigi, Japan, Hiroyuki Takahashi is regarded as one of the leading figures of traditional Japanese calligraphy.

Due to limited capacity, participants may reserve a spot in only one of the two workshop sessions.

• Photography and video shooting permissions will be requested from the workshop participants.

• Workshop materials will be supplied by the museum.

The workshop will be held in Japanese with translation into Turkish.

The workshop is not suitable for participants under 18 years old.
