WORKERS LEAVING THE FACTORY
(ARBEITER VERLASSEN DIE FABRIK), 1995
Germany | DVD, Black-White & Color, 36' | German
Director: Harun Farocki
Based on the Lumière brothers’ 1895 film of the same title, Harun Farocki creates a montage of scenes from 100 years of film history showing “workers leaving the factory.” While through these scenes Farocki sets forth reflections of the economy and an iconography of the working class, he also points to cinema itself, which likewise picks up its audience from the gates of the factory to take them into private lives.
