Whiskey with Vodka

Whiskey with Vodka (Whisky Mit Vodka)
2008, 104’, 35mm
Subtitles: Turkish, English
Director: Andreas Dresen

Otto Kullberg is an aging actor, popular especially with women, and who enjoys being at the center of attention and leading a bohemian lifestyle. On a day when he has once again drunk too much he ruins the shoot of his new film. Fearing that he might flake out completely a stand-in is hired. All the scenes are shot a second time with Arno, who is much younger. Not only does Otto have to duel with the new actor to win back his role, he has to fight for his real life as well. Reminiscent of Truffaut’s Day for Night, in Whiskey with Vodka the scenario, conceived on the set of the film which takes place in the 1920s, gets mixed up with the characters’ real life stories. The film shifts to reality, the lines become dialogues in real life. In his new film, Andreas Dresen, who drew much attention last year with Cloud 9, presents us an entertaining ‘film within film’ with skillful acting and a scenario that mingles reality and fiction.
