THE DOUBLE LIFE OF VÉRONIQUE

THE DOUBLE LIFE OF VÉRONIQUE (LA DOUBLE VIE DE VÉRONIQUE), 1991
France, Poland, Norway | DCP, Color, 98’| French, Polish
Director: Krzysztof Kieślowski
Cast: Irène Jacob, Wladyslaw Kowalski, Haline Gryglaszewska

This poetic story about twin spirits, mysticism, and longing is among Kieślowski’s masterpieces. Two young women lead separate lives; Véronique in France and Weronika in Poland. They have no blood relation, they have never met, but they are physically identical to one another and strangely aware of each other’s presence. Above all, both have an incredibly beautiful voice and musical talent. Another similarity is their cardiac malformation. The film has excellent performances by the entire cast and Irène Jacob is exceptionally captivating in the dual role which won her the “Best Actress Award” at Cannes.
