THE BOAT

THE BOAT (DAS BOOT), 1981
Germany | DVD, Color, 149’ | German, English, French
Director: Wolfgang Petersen
Cast: Jürgen Prochnow, Herbert Grönemeyer, Klaus Wennemann

During World War II, from a total of forty thousand German U-boat crew members, only ten thousand survived. The film is the story of one such submarine crew, on a search-and-destroy mission that is no easy task. The thrill after they sink their first ship quickly gives way to fear of a possible counterattack. Director Wolfgang Petersen successfully introduces us to the human side of seamen as we discover a different aspect of this epic war.
