A Lithuanian war refugee, Karin marries fisherman Antonio to escape the internment camp and accompanies him to his native island of Stomboli. But life on this volcanic island is not much different than that of a prison camp. Even most of the old natives of the island have abandoned their homes. Despite all her efforts, Karin is rejected by the extremely traditional and religious islanders. Unable to fit in, she plunges into a crisis. The first collaboration between Ingrid Bergman and neo-realist pioneer Roberto Rossellini, Stromboli reflects postwar poverty and afflictionin all its reality.
