Inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s classic fairy tale The Little Mermaid, this visual feast by Hayao Miyazaki, a master of animation, tells the simple yet profound story of five-year-old Sosuke. At the beginning of this hand-drawn animation, Sosuke, who lives on a cliff by the sea, frees the goldfish Ponyo, who is trapped in a jar, and cuts his finger in the process. Ponyo licks the wound and heals it, and gains the ability to turn into a human whenever she wants. This leads to a series of ecological disasters, and Ponyo and her new friend Sosuke find themselves in an adventure that is breathtaking and magical.
