Director: Patricio Guzmán

Director Patricio Guzmán had to leave his country in 1973 after Pinochet’s coup d’état and his film trilogy reads Chile’s painful history through its geography. The first film is set in the Atacama Desert with an 3000 meter altitude where astronomers from all around the world meet to examine galaxies. Above is the bright sky and the stars, below are mummies hidden in the sand, the bones of the victims of the Pinochet dictatorship, and the families searching for them. This poetic connection between stars and bones is also reflected in the film’s visual aesthetic.
