Morgiana

Morgiana, 1972
Director: Juraj Herz; 99 min, Czech, Color
Actors: Iva Janzurová, Josef Abrhám, Nina Divísková, Petr Cepek

Director Juraj Herz’s Morgiana resembles a modern cinematic version of a thoroughly Gothic melodrama. The film tells the story of twin sisters Viktorie and Klara (both played by actress Iva Janzurová). Jealous of her sister’s popularity, “evil twin” Viktorie doses “good twin” Klara’s tea with a slow-acting poison. As the latter grows hysterically weak, the former finds success increasingly compromised by guilt, blackmail, and the bothersome need to kill others lest she be exposed. Morgiana is both a straightforward whodunit and a garishly decked-out costume drama and period piece.
