With a screenplay by Nick Cave, Lawless was nominated for the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, and is an adaptation of Matt Bondurant’s novel The Wettest County in the World where Bondurant tells the real life story of his own family. Set in the 1930s prohibition era Franklin County, Virginia, the film follows the three bootlegging Bondurant brothers. One day, the brothers who use their gas station and restaurant as a cover for their illegal trade of alcohol receive an unexpected visit from the county authorities. The authorities demand a cut of their profits in order to allow the brothers to continue with their trade, and when the brothers relentlessly refuse to give in, a bloody war will erupt between them and the authorities.
