Winner of the Oscar for Best Foreign Film in 1997, Kolya is one of the most beloved classics of Czech cinema, portraying the heartwarming story of a Russian mother and her five-year-old son Kolya, whose paths cross with Luka, a retired cello player from the State Philharmonic Orchestra. Set in 1989 during the Velvet Revolution that ended the communist regime in Czechoslovakia as it was then called, the leading role of this humane, tragicomic film belongs to Zdeněk Svěrák, who is also the father of the film’s director.
