IN SPRING (VESNOI), 1929

Soviet Union | DCP, Black-White | 67’
Director: Mikhail Kaufman

Mikhail Kaufman, Dziga Vertov’s brother and close collaborator, presents a portrait of Kyiv observed through the “cine-eye” approach. The film captures the awakening of the city through the rhythm of everyday life alongside lyrical images of nature. In contrast to Vertov’s industry- and technology-oriented perspective, Kaufman’s camera turns toward human faces, children, animals, and seasonal transformations. In this sense, In Spring stands out as an early example that approaches the experience of the modern city through a poetic and humanistic lens.
