The first Singaporean film to win an award at the Cannes Film Festival, Ilo Ilo describes the moving relationship the Lim family has established with their new servant Teresa. Commended by Screen Daily magazine with the words “Little Gem”, the film is set at the end of the 1990’s. Like most Filipino women, Teresa leaves her house and home and comes to Singapore for better living conditions and to make money.However, the family’s young and problematic youngster, Jiale establishes a different relationship with the servant Teresa. The film was awarded the Golden Camera award at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival.
