EFFI BRIEST (FONTANE EFFI BRIEST), 1974
Germany | HDD, Black - White, 134’ | German
Director: Rainer Werner Fassbinder
Cast: Hanna Schygulla, Wolfgang Schenck, Ulli Lommel

Effi Briest, young and carefree, is married to Baron von Instetten, a man very much her senior. Her encounter with Major Crampas adds a temporary flurry of excitement to her life. Years later, the Baron learns of their relationship, which is now long over – with dire consequences. Based on Effi Briest by Theodor Fontane, Fassbinder stays true to the novel, yet he introduces a narrator and carries over the irony and creates his own unique imagery. Effi Briest is played, with touching childish charm, by a fabolous Hanna Schygulla.
