Dust

Dust (Staub), 2007

Germany, 35mm, 90’, Color, German

Dust, which had its premiere at the 2007 Venice Film Festival, is about, in a word, dust. With one tenth of a millimeter in diameter, dust is a substance nobody wants. But it is everywhere; and getting rid of it is no easy task. Dust cannot be described simply as dirt; despite the fight to clear it away it always returns, just as we think it’s gone it comes back. Hardly perceptible to the naked eye, dust is the smallest visible subject a film can be about. Taking an in-depth look at ‘dust,’ the documentary also hears fromcleaning crews, scientists, artists, and industry representatives who all contend with it.
