DARK WORLD: THE LIFE OF AŞIK VEYSEL (KARANLIK DÜNYA: AŞIK VEYSEL’İN HAYATI), 1952

Türkiye | DCP, Black & White, 60’ | Turkish
Director: Metin Erksan
Cast: Aşık Veysel Şatıroğlu, Ayfer Feray, Kemal Bekir

Recognized as veteran director Metin Erksan’s debut as well as the first realistic rural drama, The Dark World offers a personal and deeply human portrait of the folk poet Âşık Veysel, tracing his life from losing his sight as a child to the formation of his artistic identity.

Shot from a screenplay by Bedri Rahmi Eyüboğlu, the film was cut and reshaped by censors and survives today only as a fragmented print. Recently surfaced footage offers new clues to the film’s lost and altered structure, while the existing print features notable documentary sequences on the transition to modern agriculture, education, and healthcare in rural villages.

For the Thursday screening of this film, visitors can collect their tickets at the museum desk on the day of the screening. Tickets are free for residents of Türkiye.
