CYRANO DE BERGERAC (CIRANO DI BERGERAC), 1925

Italy, France | DCP, Color | 120’
Director: Augusto Genina
Cast: Pierre Magnier, Linda Moglia, Angelo Ferrari
Music: Kurt Kuenne

Set in 17th-century France, the film tells the story of Cyrano, known for his wit and courage but condemned to unrequited love because of his physical appearance. When the woman he loves falls for a handsome soldier who cannot express his feelings, Cyrano becomes the invisible author of this romance by voicing his own words through another. In addition to its elaborate sets and costumes, the film is remarkable for being almost entirely colored using the Pathé stencil color technique. Completed through three years of hand-coloring, the work was long considered lost before being rediscovered in 1996.
