Director: Pedro Costa
Cast: Ventura, Vanda Duarte, Beatriz Duarte
After the demolition of Fontainhas, most of its residents have been moved to new apartment blocks. Abandoned by his wife, Ventura spends his days visiting the neighbours who remain in the old quarter. The letter he recites draws inspiration from both the letters Cape Verdean immigrants wrote to their families and the notes poet Robert Desnos sent to his wife before his death. Moving like a ghost story, the film makes visible the effects of the Carnation Revolution on the city’s poorest districts, while recording the memory of a Lisbon that no longer exists. Turning Fontainhas into a living monument, the film was nominated for the Golden Lion in Venice, cementing Costa’s place in world cinema.
