Caesar Must Die (Cesare Deve Morire)

Italy, 2012, 76’
Director: Paolo Taviani, Vittorio Taviani
Cast: Cosimo Rega, Giovanni Arcuri, Antonio Frasca, Juan Dario Bonetti
Language: Italian

The cast this Golden Bear winning film are the real prisoners in the High Security Rebibbia Prison. The prisoners decide to stage Shakespeare’s play “Julius Caesar” in the prison. As great directors of the Italian cinema, the Traviani Brothers tell the story in a setup that interlaces the daily lives of the prisoners who have come together to make the film, with performing arts, the reality with the fantasy. Caesar Must Die can be deemed an“old fashioned” and nostalgic film as it deals with a social problem, but it turns the architecture of the prison into a creative setting by dramatizing it for the production of the performance and thus studying the concept of space at thesame time.
