After the arduous shoot of Casa de Lava, many people living in Cape Verde asked Pedro Costa to deliver letters to their relatives in Lisbon. Through this encounter, the director discovered the Fontainhas neighbourhood and went on to make Bones, the first film in his trilogy. Beginning with the birth of a baby to a suicidal young mother, the film follows her and her debt-ridden lover as they try to care for the child amid the poverty that surrounds them. Moving between fiction and documentary, Bones won the award for Best Cinematography at the 1997 Venice Film Festival.
