BLOOD (O SANGUE), 1989

Portugal | DCP, Black-White, 95’ | Portuguese
Director: Pedro Costa
Cast: Pedro Hestnes, Nuno Ferreira, Inês de Medeiros

In his first feature, shot in black and white, Costa tells the story of two brothers aged ten and seventeen who are abandoned by their father. Frequently absent due to illness, the father one day fails to return, leaving Nino and Vicente alone, surrounded by debts and the pressures of their uncle. As their brief “freedom” comes to an end, Portugal’s social and political transformations, class divides, and search for identity seep into this dark fable. Made during the formative years of the Portuguese New Wave, Blood establishes Costa’s signature through its chiaroscuro aesthetic—a tale of both personal and collective fracture.
