A SEASON IN HAKKÂRI (HAKKȂRİ’DE BİR MEVSİM), 1983

Türkiye | DCP, Color, 110’ | Turkish
Director: Erden Kıral
Cast: Genco Erkal, Şerif Sezer, Macit Koper

Based on Ferit Edgü’s 1977 novel O, with a screenplay by Onat Kutlar, the film tells the story of an exiled, nameless teacher spending time in the snowbound village of Pirkanis in Hakkâri.

Surrounded by harsh natural conditions, poverty, illness, and solitude, the teacher bears witness to the villagers’ lives while questioning his own existence. Erden Kıral builds a poetic cinematic language from the rawness and silence of daily life, without confining Eastern Anatolia to a folkloric or epic framework. Powered by Kenan Ormanlar’s cinematography and Timur Selçuk’s score, the production creates a compelling atmosphere and won four awards at the 1983 Berlin Film Festival, including the “Silver Bear” and the “FIPRESCI Prize.”

A Season in Hakkari was restored by Sinematek/Sinema Evi with the support of Kurukahveci Mehmet Efendi.
