A Blonde in Love

A Blonde in Love, 1965
Director: Milos Forman; 90 min, Czech, Black and White
Actors: Hana Brejchová, Vladimír Pucholt, Vladimír Mensík, Ivan Kheil

Andula (Hana Brejchová) is a young working-class woman in a hick Czech town who is searching for the love of her life. She sleeps with a young pianist who is a member of a band that has come to the town from Prague and who tells her “You are a Mondrian, not a Picasso”. When she doesn’t hear from him again, she packs up and heads for the big city to track him down. She shows up on his doorstep, throwing the household (he lives with his parents) into chaos. With its superb cinematography, Brejchová’s taut performance, and dialogue that is an intoxicating mixture of longing, hope, and despair, Forman’s second film A Blonde in Love ranks among the supreme examples of cinematic tragicomedy.
