Long Friday: Vocal Painting Workshop

Friday, November 13, 2026, 18.30
Istanbul Modern Event Room 1 ve 2

As part of Istanbul Modern’s “Long Friday” program, Vokal Akademi founder Başak Doğan will lead a Vocal Painting workshop at the museum on Friday, November 13.

During the workshop, participants will be introduced to “Vocal Painting,” a pedagogically based method of musical improvisation that uses approximately 100 different gestures to guide musical expression. Using their voices as instruments, participants will experience collaborative music-making and polyphony.

About Vokal Akademi:

Vokal Akademi is a collective platform dedicated to the creation, research, and education of polyphonic vocal music. Through its choirs, which organize their own concerts, original workshops, and international festivals, the platform aims to increase access to arts and culture while encouraging collaboration and exchange in the field of polyphonic a cappella music.

Its founder and artistic director, Başak Doğan, completed her master’s degree at the Royal Danish Academy of Music, focusing on “intuitive conducting.” She is the only practitioner in Türkiye of the “Vocal Painting” method, which enables the creation of improvised music. A member of the Choral Culture Association, Doğan represents Türkiye as a jury member and instructor at international festivals, competitions, and educational programs.

The workshop is open to everyone, regardless of prior musical experience.
The workshop is free for visitors who have reservations and museum tickets.
Photography and video shooting permissions will be requested from the workshop participants.
It is recommended to wear comfortable shoes and clothing.
