Nevhiz Tanyeli, 1941

Together, 1993

Nevhiz was a student of Neşet Günal, Cemal Tollu, and Bedri Rahmi Eyüboğlu at the Fine Arts Academy. She studied painting, lithography and stained glass in Paris from 1971-1975. She has also undertaken research and further studies at museums and art galleries in France, the UK, and Spain with a particular focus on the works of Francis Goya.

The human figure has always been a central element of her work. She sees human beings as the nucleus of life and creates figures whose inner selves are suggested by clues. She depicts her figures in seemingly amorphous spaces, with the result that their world seems to be materializing from within a dream or from the depths of consciousness.

In “Together”, Nevhiz deforms her human figure with animal-like features as if to question the possibility of human existence while leaving it entirely up to the viewer to determine where or to whom this figure belongs.
