Ebru Uygun’s painting technique is born out of a synthesis in which, after dividing a previously painted canvas into strips, she reassembles them on another canvas using a collage technique which forms an abstract composition. Given this mode of transcending boundaries, her artistic practice hovers between the disciplines of performance, collage, and sculpture. The composition of the pieces can vary, being either horizontal, vertical, or diagonal. The colors and lines confuse the viewer’s sense of orientation; furthermore, after completing each painting, the artist herself decides how it will be hung.
Ebru Uygun takes inspiration from the poems of American poet E. E. Cummings (1894–1962) in this series, which includes the work “Thunder Cloud in a Raindrop.” This is a collage of pieces of painted canvas cloth that is cut, stripped and combined with other pieces by Uygun. Created with canvas, the painting’s focal point is the material that belongs to the very essence of painting. The artist is open to allow coincidental processes such as a drip of paint, the sagging of fabric, folding
of stripes, curvature, and the solidification of paint to impact the result. Solidified paint on the painting contributes to the texture of the work and simultaneously prevents it from being evaluated as a two-dimensional surface.
