İnci Furni, 1976

Obstructions, 2022

Born in 1976, İnci Furni completed her undergraduate studies in the Painting Department at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University. Between 2007 and 2010, she was part of the Hafriyat Group. In her practice, Furni places particular emphasis on drawing, developing compositions that move between figurative narration and abstract forms. Her paintings often create an atmosphere that oscillates between reality and imagination. Personal experiences intersect with broader social concerns in these works, forming layered narrative fields. References to mythology, social stereotypes, everyday symbols, and the formal possibilities of painting converge in her practice. This range enables Furni to pursue different themes and visual investigations across her various series.

The installation titled “Obstacles” emerges from the challenges the artist encountered while moving into a new studio. In particular, the visual and physical accessibility issues experienced in Istanbul form one of the conceptual starting points of the work. Constructed through linear arrangements that evoke the form of metal grates, these abstract barriers also allude to the restrictions on thought and expression that have been increasingly felt in recent years. Designed roughly at the scale of a billboard and placed on the floor, the horizontal composition brings a visual language associated with public space into the exhibition environment. At the same time, the vibrancy of the colors suggests the possibility of overcoming these obstacles, extending beyond the sense of pressure and limitation they imply.
