From the series “Constructed” 13

Zeynep Kayan, 1986

From the series “Constructed” 13, 2016

In her photography and video-based works, Zeynep Kayan explores both technical and conceptual aspects, such as how the two mediums affect each other, the relationship between the two, and the possibility of their interchangeability. The artist determines her method during the process and focuses on ideas such as repeatedly taking a photograph, returning to old photographs, investigating differences between old and new, adding layers in between, taking photographs of videos, and deciding on the stages between the first shot and the point reached through interventions—always allowing for the accidental, and exploration through experimentation. Returning to her experiments and investigating where and how she can proceed from there, the artist approaches her works as a series of possibilities that may never end or be completed. Thus, she transforms the photograph she has captured, or the image itself, into a material that is repeated, divided and deconstructed.
The series “Constructed” combines photographs taken in the past with contemporary images. Thus, while touching on the moment, which changes with every video or photograph taken, the artist aims to escape the two-dimensional surface. In the series, which emphasizes the performative aspect of the videos, Kayan explores new ways of seeing and perceiving by treating the image as object and the body as material.
