By the Wall

İnci Eviner, 1956

By the Wall, 2005

İnci Eviner’s drawing-based images meet the audience with new perspectives as they are re-interpreted in different disciplines. These images – which sometimes appear as limbs, sometimes as faces, sometimes as objects, and sometimes as tools – come together to play a role in completely different stories without becoming detached from their original starting points. Taking into account history, philosophy, architecture and art history, she re-examines cultural codes, gender, issues of power, and the situation of those who have trouble finding their place in society, who lack power, and who are excluded from society.

In her drawings, İnci Eviner brings together different figures in society in her imaginary world. As images bearing traces of different identities line up “By the Wall,” figures that yet exist only as “shadows” accompany them in the background. Exposing these figures who are searching for their own identities, names and habitats is a method for the artist to grasp the workings of her mind.
