ART FiLM BIENNALE - Selection from 2005 Kunstfilm Biennale Cologne

The Art Film Biennale program brings different view points to the relationship of film, video and art. This year Cologne and Istanbul are twin cities and thus the cultural exchange is reflected within the Kunstfilm selection. Kunstfilm is a young festival celebrating its 5th year in October 2007. Istanbul Modern Cinema's selection of 2005 is comprised of 29 art films from the international competition section which involves 6 thematic programs along with two parts of experimental films.

The program juxtaposes and brings together art and film in different themes. The Last Paradises is a program delving into utopian topics; Finding Identity with a visual language explores the artist's self-quest and social commentary. Homage to Cinema underlines the similarities as well as the differences in a most astonishing manner. Image Language and Perception Processes relate to social topics. Integrated with environment and conceptual personal meanings. Kunstfilm Biennale Köln is a project of Kunststiftung NRW, SK Stiftung Kultur and the city of Cologne.

"Hitchcock and Modigliani, Kippenberger and Barney, Jochen Kuhn and VALIE EXPORT, Tracey Emin and Sam Taylor-Wood: even if this year's Kunstlilm Biennale is particularly prestigious and international, the themes remain the same as always. The focus was and is artists' films as an attractive point of intersection between the fine arts and cinema, the moving picture as a time-based art work. The competition features works that are narrative and experimental, entertaining and intellectual, cheeky and analytical, fictive and documentary. They illustrate the current vitality of the art scene, above all its growing importance for the renewal of cinema."

Festival Director Heinz Peter Schwerfel will give a presentation for the program opening on 31st May Thursday. The presentation and screening will be open to public.
