Oya Eczacıbaşı is listed among those who pull the art world's strings

Art + Auction magazine has published the “Power 2011” guide in its December issue

Chair of İstanbul Modern Oya Eczacıbaşı is listed among the most powerful persons of the art world in “Power 2011,” the December issue of the magazine Art + Auction published in America.

In the “Power 2011” annual guide, Art + Auction magazine catalogues the “people who pull the art world’s strings” in various categories including curators and collectors, traditionalists and trendsetters, players and designers, brash market-makers and behind-the-scene brokers.

Listed among patrons of art and artists, Oya Eczacıbaşı is mentioned in the magazine as follows: “The doyenne of contemporary-art sponsorship in Turkey, Eczacıbaşı is the founder and chair of İstanbul Modern, the city’s first private museum devoted to the 20th century and beyond and the premier venue for rising stars, from Kutlug Ataman to Ryan Trecartin. Her museum partners with the Centre George Pompidou in promoting young artists, and she sits on MOMA’s International Council in New York.”

Alongside Oya Eczacıbaşı, listed among the 10 patrons are; Carlos Slim Helu who was named the world’s richest person of 2011 by Forbes and opened Museo Soumaya in Mexico to house his collection of more than 60,000 works with an estimated worth of more than $700 million; Prada’s CEO Miucca Prada; Alice Walton, heir to the Walmart fortune; the prominent German manufacturer Reinhold Wurth; Dasha Zhukova, founder of the Iris Foundation and of Moscow’s Garage Center for the Contemporary Arts; Wallis Annenberg, president of the Annenberg Foundation; Bernard Arnault, chair and CEO of LVMH (Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton) and Christian Dior S.A.; Eli Board, a founder of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; and Chen Dongsheng, founder of Taikang Life, China’s first private insurance company.

They convey the stories behind where the art world is going and who is taking it there and this year, for the first time, thay have added a top-ten list of the most powerful names from different categories.

The Top-10 “Power List” consists of Seikha Al-Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, Larry Gagosian, Eli Broad, Dasha Zhukova, François Pinault, David Zwirner, Peter Brant, Budi Tek, François Curiel, and Stephane Cosman Connery.
