Director: Carla Simón
Cast: Laia Artigas, Paula Robles, Bruna Cusí

Summer 1993 is the debut feature of Carla Simón whose film Alcarràs won the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival last month. The film tells the story of six-year-old Frida who is trying to adapt to life in her uncle’s farm in the countryside after the death of her mother. Containing autobiographical elements, the Spanish director wanted the film to resemble a sort of “home video” shot in the 90s and her camera is like an actual living, breathing observer. Achieving a careful balance between story and atmosphere, Summer 1993 tenderly and subtly conveys a child’s loneliness and emotional confusion and is especially notable for the performance of its child actors.
