Born in Budapest during the late 19th century, twin sisters Dóra and Lili are orphaned at a young age. On the New Year's Eve of 1900, which is also a centennial, the sisters fall asleep in the snow while they are trying to sell matches, and are kidnapped by two enigmatic men and are separated from one another. Years later, the sisters take the same train, unaware of each other. Dóra is a crook travelling in the first class luxury wagon, while Lili is a feminist anarchist travelling along with animals on a separate wagon. Mysterious Mr. Z, whom they meet on the train, falls in love with both sisters while the three embark on a fantastic journey between the centuries. My Twentieth Century, where Enyedi questions the position of women in a world shaped by inventors like Edison and Tesla, who founded 20th century modernity, won the Golden Camera award at the Cannes Film Festival in 1989.
